Episode One of Lions - The Greatest Drag Strip covers the Southern California track's inception with Mickey Thompson as its frist manager in 1955, through the return of nitro racing after the "fuel ban" was lifted in 1962.
Alongside massive powerlines and refineries, accessed off the San Diego Freeway in West Long Beach, there lived Lions Drag Strip, an iconic, motorized centerstage, which mixed damp, ocean air with the pleasant smells of popcorn, tamales and hamburgers, plus the acrid blends of nitromethane and gas, punctuated by shrill, ear-splitting noise that rang for days.
Some who raced there became household names. Others faded into obscurity... while wide-eyed, loyal fans witnessed it all - the greatest of times, and unexpected tragedy.
