Home \ What is Scale?
On this web site and pretty much any web site or publication dealing with models you will see the term scale. Usually a scale will be denoted as 1/18 or 1:18.
But how do I know what size it is you ask. The easiest way to explain this is if you took eighteen 1/18 scale cars and placed them end to end, they would be the same length as the real car they represent. It would take twenty-four 1/24 scale cars to accomplish the same thing.
With model railroading, scales get a little more complicated, but not impossible. The scales are designated with letters (Z, N, HO, O, etc.).
Z scale is 1/220 full size.
N scale is 1/160 full size.
HO scale is 1/87 full size.
S scale is 1/64 full size.
O scale is 1/48 full size.
G scale is 1/22.5 full size.
